Who are we?
We are an independent insurance agency locally owned and operated by Keith Fearing's family since 1957. That's right, we've been serving our local customers for over fifty years now.
Where we got our start?
M. Keith Fearing Jr., started it all with the purchase of A.W.Drinkwater Insurance Agency. A.W.Drinkwater was the man who telegraphed the message about Wilber and Orville's First Flight. Several years later Keith purchased the Theodore Meekins Insurance Agency. It was the merging of these two agencies that formed what is now known as Outer Banks Insurance Agency, Inc.

Keith Fearing Jr. opened Dare County's first pharmacy in 1947; at the time, it was the only pharmacy between Morehead City and Elizabeth City. He was chosen president of the State Pharmaceutical Association and in 1994 was named North Carolina's Pharmacist of the Year.
Keith was able to secure doctors to provide medical attention to the residents of Dare County when there were no doctors available. He helped in establishing the first bank on Hatteras Island and bringing central water to the Barrier Island beaches.
He served as a State Representative in the General Assembly in the 1960's. In 1967 he was instrumental in passing SS 58-45-1 which is commonly known as "Beach Plan." Prior to this legislation there was little to no insurance coverage available for the coastal areas.
A love of the area and dedication to the community is the foundation of Outer Banks Insurance Agency. It is our mission to continue the customer service that Keith Fearing Jr. introduced us to over 50 years ago.
The Second Generation...
Keith's son, Malcolm K. Fearing III, met his bride, Susan, at the Southeastern Insurance Institute in 1980. Within two weeks of meeting, they were engaged and six weeks later they were married. The Third Generation...
Keith's granddaughter, Kathryn Fearing Gore, graduated from Elon University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting and a minor in Business Administration in 2006. She was the treasurer for Delta Delta Delta and a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a business fraternity.) After graduation, she was selected for the Leadership Path Program, a managers training program at American Express. Kathryn loves customer service and looks forward to continuing the family traditions.
